Tesco School Fun Run

Children from Year 1 and Year 2 were lucky enough to take part in the School Tesco Fun Run at Saltwell Park, with Miss Scott and Mrs Ollivere. The course was one mile in total and the children ran together with other children from schools across Gateshead and Newcastle. All of the infant children ran off together and we are delighted to report that one of our Year 2 children came first! Congratulations to Lewis Cheel! Miss Scott and Mrs Ollivere also ran the course with the children, encouraging everyone to finish. Well done to all of the children who took part.

Fun Afternoon

As part of Healthy Week we held our Sports Fun Afternoon on Tuesday 28th June. We invited the Year 6 children from the Junior school to come and assist Miss Scott in the setting up and delivery of the activities. The junior children led the sports stations for the infants, who tried to visit all 17 of the activities. We all had a great afternoon and thank goodness the rain held off!

Bling My Bike/Scooter Day

During Recycling Week the children celebrated Bling My Bike Day. The children decorated their bikes and scooters at home and brought them into school to be judged by Mrs Ollivere. The scooters and bikes were so beautifully decorated and lots of time was taken at home to create the designs. Well done to the six winners and all of the children who took part!

Sustainable Sounds.

As part of Recycling Week we invited Michael Freeman into school to work with the children with recyclable instruments. Michael spends a lot of his time visiting educational settings and creating music with instruments he has made form objects we tend to throw out. Each class had their own individual workshop where they all had the opportunity to play along with Michael. The children loved it, especially making lots of noise!

Year One and Two children who play the violin and the cello, performed a concert for their parents this term. The children have all worked very hard in their music lessons and should be proud that they can play such complicated instruments. Well done to the Musicians!

Art Gallery Project

Our Art Gallery Project has been a roaring success. Miss Hudson has created a fantastic Gallery Display Area in the main building where we have displayed some of the pieces. We had lots of fantasic art work sent in; we can see both children and parents have enjoyed creating their own personal imaginative designs, in a range of genre. The remaining pieces will be hung upstairs in the corridors so everyone can see them. Well done to all our budding artists! If parents have any A4 old frames at home they no longer need, please can you send them into school asap. Thankyou.

Give it some Welly for Woodland Week!

The children have had great fun this week during "Give it some Welly for Woodland Week" The children have loved getting out and about in our school grounds discovering all of the exciting places to explore and play. We have been splashing in muddy puddles, climbing tress, making dens and taking part in imaginative play. Both teachers and children have realised how lucky we are to have the extensive school grounds and how we can extend our learning outside, in all weathers.

Fairtrade Show off the Label

As part of our Fairtrade Fortnight the whole school has been involved with showing the fairtrade label in imaginative and interesting ways. Every child has been involved in the initiative; the first was every child using their hand print to create the symbol and the second which is on a larger scale, where we used cut out oak leaves to make the symbol on the hall floor. Please take time to look at the photos of the art work in progress and the completed pieces.

Art Session at the Baltic Art Centre

On Tuesday 1st March, twelve children from across all six classes went to the Baltic Art Centre to have an art session. This visit was to help the children to decorate their fairtrade bunting for the event on the 11th March at Baltic Square. All of the children enjoyed painting the bunting and using lots of different imaginative ideas for patterns and images. At the end of the visit the children were also lucky enough to go to the top of the Baltic Flour Mill where there is a viewing area where they looked at the fantastic view across the River Tyne.

Fairtrade Bunting Day on Gateshead Quayside

On Friday 11th March, thirty children from across the school had the opportunity to go to the Baltic Square in Gateshead and parade across the Millenium Bridge in support of Fairtrade products, along with other school children from Gateshead and Newcastle. All of the children in the school have been busy decorating Fairtrade, cotton bunting which was strung across the length of the bridge. The children followed a band, and the Mayors of Newcastle and Gateshead across the Millenium Bridge and back again carrying fairtrade flags. Although the weather was blustery and a little chilly, the children enjoyed being outside and being involved in the event. The children had the chance to have their photograph taken with the Mayor of Gateshead, who spent time talking to the them about what they had being doing at school to support Fairtrade Fortnight. Follow the link on the images for more photos of the visit.

Eco-Warriors trip to Sainsbury's

Our Eco-Warriors went down to Sainsbury's to see what fairtrade products they could find in the supermarket and to buy some produce for our fairtrade raffle. The children were excellent at spotting the fairtrade symbol and we bought a range of food such as bananas, oranges, coffee, tea and jam for the raffle. The children had a well deserved bottle of juice and some biscuits in the coffee shop for doing a grand job! Click on the photos to see more images.

Year 2 try to break a World Record!

On Wednesday 19th January at precisely 11.40am, year 2 children had a go at breaking a Guinness World Record! We attempted to help break the world record for the number of people dancing at the same time. We danced for five minutes exactly all following the same dance routine!
Although 555 schools were registered to take part and nearly 90,000 pupils, unfortunately we didn’t break the record!! Click on the photo below for more images!

Citizenship Ceremony

Citceremony

On Wednesday 24th November some children from Year One went to sing at a ceremony for British Citizenship at the civic centre. We got to meet people from different countries around the world and watched the ceremony as they became official citizens of our country. We were asked to stand up and sing two songs to entertain the people at the ceremony! The songs we chose to perform were called 'Happiness Tree' and 'I can see clearly now'. We also learned and joined in with the British National Anthem!

The most exciting part of the visit was that we got to meet the Mayor of Gateshead and he gave us all a special sticker! We even had our photo taken with him in the special council chamber.

After the ceremony we had juice and biscuits with the mayor. Lots of the people at the ceremony came over to Miss Michell to say how beautifully we sang and that we should be very proud because we represented our school very well.

‘Safe to Learn’ Day
(in support of anti-bullying week)

Tuesday 16th November 2010

On Tuesday 16th November 2011 we had our annual ‘Safe to Learn’ Day in support of national anti-bullying week 2011. The themes of the day were:
 Keeping Safe in School
 Resolving problems with our friends
 Knowing you can talk to someone if you have a problem

Chris Bostock the Storyteller came to work with all of the children and tell them some stories about friendship and teamwork! We took part in lots of different activities such as:
• Completing a questionnaire all about feeling safe in school
• Writing friendship poems and songs
• Making gifts for friends such as bookmarks
• Making masks about how we were feeling
• Roleplaying different situations where we might have no-one to play with, get hurt at playtime, accidently break something etc. We discussed our feelings & solutions to the problems
• We learnt some new games to play at playtimes

Reception also thought about how to keep themselves safe outside of school and thought about road safety. A fun day was had by all!

Author Visit

 Adam Bushnell

In November, an author, Adam Bushnell visited our school and worked with all of the children in school. The children listened to traditional stories from around the world about dragons, witches and wolves. Reception children were fascinated by the story of the Seven Little kids and some budding actors were discovered! Year one children were very enthusiastic in their descriptions of dragons. They created a fierce dragon which even frightened their teachers! Year two enjoyed helping to develop a story about witches and produced some lovely drawings.
The day was very successful and children were even able to buy a book signed by the author.
